How to Download and Install Tally Prime in 2026: The Complete Setup Guide

Before you start: system requirements

Tally Prime is a Windows desktop application. According to Tally Solutions’ installation guide, your computer needs:

• Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 or later, 64-bit
• Memory: at least 512 MB RAM (we recommend 4 GB or more for a smooth experience with larger data)
• Disk: at least 512 MB free space, plus room for your company data and backups
• Permissions: administrator rights on the computer

Step 1: Download the official setup file

• Go to the official download page at tallysolutions.com/download.
• Click Download for Tally Prime. You will get a setup file (setup.exe).
• Optional but recommended: generate the SHA-256 checksum of the file and compare it with the value Tally publishes, as their guide advises.

Step 2: Install Tally Prime

1. Double-click setup.exe and allow the Windows permission prompt.
2. Select Install New to install a fresh copy.
3. Leave the default application path (C:\Program Files\TallyPrime) or click to change it.
4. Click Install and wait for the progress bar to complete.
5. Click Launch Tally Prime.

You can install Tally Prime Edit Log alongside it in a separate folder if your auditor requires an edit trail.

Step 3: Activate a licence or use Educational mode

When Tally Prime opens for the first time you can choose:

In Educational mode every feature is available, but vouchers can only be dated on the 1st, 2nd and 31st of a month. That is plenty for practice.

Step 4: Create your first company

1. From the Gateway of Tally, press Alt+K (Company) and choose Create.
2. Enter the company name, mailing name, address, state, country and PIN code.
3. Set the Financial year beginning from and Books beginning from dates.
4. Press Ctrl+A to save.

Step 5: Turn on the features you need

Press F11 (Features) and enable only what your business uses: Maintain Inventory, Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST), Enable Payroll, Bill-wise details and so on. You can change these at any time.

Step 6: Create your basic ledgers

Go to Create > Ledger from the Gateway of Tally and add your bank account, cash, sales, purchase, expense and party ledgers. Tally Prime ships with 28 predefined groups, so most ledgers just need the right group, such as Sundry Debtors for customers or Bank Accounts for your bank.
